NEW PANTEG 0 POINTS BEAUFORT RC 33 POINTS
Beaufort ended their season with a convincing win in this friendly encounter
against former rivals New Panteg from the GNP League. They were the dominant
force in a match scoring 5 tries and keeping a clean sheet due to a robust defence
.
The home side found themselves outdriven in the loose and despite a good lineout
their scant resources failed to make an impact with the possession . However,
they defended well and it was fifteen minutes into the match before Beaufort
's fullback Matthew Burrows was worked into space to motor in from thirty metres
to make the first touchdown. Dilan Smith found the target with the conversion
.
Wing Kyle Purnell got the next latching on to a final pass to squeeze his way
into the corner but at the break Beaufort were restricted to a 12 point lead
, not in the least due to a number of unforced handling errors. The visitors
were on the rampage immediately after the restart and ball pinched at a five
metre scrummage was used by centre Nigel Griffiths to launch himself through
the cover for the first of his two tries which Smith converted brillantly form
the touchline.
The next was a superb effort initiated by wing Stuart Lee who attacked thrillingly
from half way to cut his way almost to the line . Substitute flanker Rhys Griffiths
rounded off the movement to score his first try for Beaufort and Matthew Jordan
coming on at the interval at fullback slotted over the conversion. Griffiths
, Jordan come from a stable of young Beaufort players who together with Andrew
Morgan ( flanker) and Mike Vaughan ( centre), Gareth Burcher ( prop) gave an
impressive account of themselves and were never far from the action .
Before the hour was up the match was reduced to passive scrums but it made little
difference .New Panteg were frantically trying to shore up a shakey defence
as Beaufort drove deep into their opponents heartland with attack after attack.
Danny Carey cut a swathe through the cover with two barn storming runs only
to be stopped tantalisingly close to the line. A score was inevitable and Nigel
Griffiths got the fifth and final try under the posts which Jordan improved
to take the score beyond the 30 point mark.
